The Environmental Benefits of Hemp

Hemp is an ethical, sustainable, eco-friendly, and highly beneficial plant. Growing it organically has more benefits than the organic richness we get from organic hemp products. Hemp is a well-rounded plant that can make the earth greener than it presently is.

  1. Hemp is an air purifier. It consumes the carbon dioxide produced in the atmosphere and leaves the air cleaner. Hemp is a more efficient air purifier compared to trees considering that for every ton of hemp, 1.63 tons of carbon is eliminated from the air.
  2. Hemp leaves, flowers and stalks are packed with nutrients, which make it so popular. As the plant grows, the biological process happens and some leaves shed and enrich the soil with nutrients beneficial for the next crop.
  3. Hemp is a great plant for crop rotation because it is an annual crop that grows in four months after being planted making it great for enriching the soil and rejuvenating it for other crops.
  4. Hemp does not need pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides for a fruitful yield. This is great for the environment because the chemicals used in these products contaminate the soil, the air, and water; leading to health issues such as cancer.
  5. The hemp plant has a root network of up to nine feet. This is a great solution for farm lands that experience soil erosion because the root network of the hemp plant can hold the soil together, thus preventing soil erosion.
  6. Most natural fiber plants such as soya, cotton and almond require a lot of water for survival. However, the hemp plant can survive with little water (250 to 300 mm of moisture during the vegetative growing stage). It can therefore be planted in most regions except deserts.
  7. The hemp plant can be used to make over 25,000 products. This means that every part of the hemp plant is put to good use in the food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, construction, automobile, and many more industries.
  8. The hemp plant cleans the air, regenerates the soil, and it cleans soil and water of toxins and heavy metals such as lead through phytoaccumulation. It is therefore important to ethically plant hemp on land that is clean if it is going to be used for other purposes other than cleaning the soil because these toxins and heavy metals can be transferred to hemp products during production.
  9. If hemp is used to make paper, it can reduce the number of trees that are cut down during paper production. Hemp is ideal for paper production because it can be grown in a shorter period compared to trees (it is sustainable), it contains 57% cellulose i.e. a primary ingredient in paper (more cellulose than wood), and it contains less lignin (meaning that less chemicals will be used during production).

Deforestation, erosion, air pollution, water pollution, and soil contamination are on a steady increase. As more tree species become endangered in America, we need a solution that can help us regenerate soil, restore forests so that wildlife can have favorable habitat and clean the air breathe in every day. Hemp is a great solution to make the earth greener and preserve numerous fragile ecosystems.
